The Judges will consider the following:

Presentation (15 points):

Each team’s presentation should be clear and systematic. They should 1) Identify the problem, 2) Present their solution, and 3) Explain the reasoning behind their solution. These presentations should identify and discuss the crucial moral dimensions of the case. Teams should indicate awareness and consideration of different viewpoints, and address potential counterarguments to their solution. Above all, the team must satisfactorily answer the question they were asked (a presentation cannot just be a team’s thoughts about the case to which the question pertains.) The judges’ scoring is not dependent on whether or not they agree with the solution, but on their impression of the teams’ clear, coherent, and succinct argument.

Questions (5 points):

The opposing team must ask thoughtful and reasonable questions. The purpose of this section is not to overwhelm the first team with questions, but to push them in their argument, and to help them consider potential counterarguments. The opposing team’s commentary must be fair and accurate of the presenting team, and they should mention their agreement or disagreement with the solution presented.

Response (10 points):

The presenting team’s response should respond directly to the questions asked by the opposing team thoughtfully and respectfully. They should address the relevant concerns by zoning in on key points whilst maintaining their original position.

Q&A (10 points):

Each judge will have an opportunity to ask the presenting team one question. The team should respond thoughtfully and thoroughly to the questions of the judges, and in doing so, deepen the analysis of the case.

Spirit (10 points):

This category reflects the team’s willingness to participate. Ultimately, the competition is not to find the best public speakers. The judges are looking for teams that feel strongly about the issues presented in the cases. Does the team exhibit a sense of passion about the topics? Is the team able to articulate the issues present? Can the team identify an ethically sound solution? Most importantly, is the team willing to have an honest and open-minded discussion with their peers?
